During my internship at Cowork Frederick I met social media consultants, tech wizards, lawyers, and writers all with one goal. To get stuff done!
Every person has different projects and just by asking about how someone’s day is you might learn something you would have never known if you stayed at home.
How I got here
This summer I started working in the Counseling & Advising Center which is where I met the Career Services Coordinator, Anne Scholl-Fiedler. She sent me information about two different marketing internships and Cowork Frederick immediately caught my eye. I had never heard of a coworking space before but the idea of a space where professionals from a wide array of industries came together to work and collaborate was particularly intriguing to me.
Even with my limited time at Cowork Frederick, I think I have been able to grasp the real meaning and reason for coworking. Coworking happens when people decide to work together. Cowork Frederick offers a community, and that is what differentiates us from flex office space. When you join a coworking space that is also part of the coworking movement, you are joining a network of people who choose to work alongside other professionals rather than working by themselves. But it’s more that just working beside each other. It’s about connecting. Cowork Frederick is where your coworkers turn into partners, mentors, and friends.
Who makes up Cowork Frederick? A group of diverse professionals who help each other, self-starters, hustlers, and leaders, dreamers, do-er’s activists and life-work balancers. This is not an office where everyone has the same mundane tasks. Every single person who comes to Cowork Frederick has different projects and just by asking about how someone’s day is you might learn something you would have never known if you stayed at home. Through this internship, I was exposed to social media marketing and also had the opportunity to learn about different job positions by meeting the wonderful people who work here including Jim, Kira, Sue, Matt, and Kimba.
I met social media consultants, tech wizards, lawyers, and writers all with one goal. To get stuff done! Everyone was extremely kind, particularly Glen who helped me revive my laptop after I accidentally spilled water on it!
But my favorite member had to be Gracie the dog. She is the sweetest dog I have met and I will keep an eye out for more pictures of her.
Cowork Frederick is a place that helps you get into a productive state of mind. It is a safe space for you to find your focus but also provide you the option to connect with others. From the outside, it seems like a small office space. Once you step inside you realize how much room there actually is. The building is beautifully designed and each room has a different vibe which is important to have in a coworking space since being in one place for a long time can get tiring. Most of my time was spent in the community room but I also really enjoyed lounging on the couches in the welcome room. Being located in Downtown Frederick was also perfect because just like people coworking, the surrounding businesses cohesively work next to each other as part of a community.
My goals for my internship at Cowork Frederick were to:
● Meet new people
● Learn about inbound marketing
● Learn about coworking
● Join a community
One of my tasks this summer was to find blogs about coworking and share them with Julia and Courtney. I found multiple blogs discussing the benefits of working with others and how diversity in these environments creates colorful and interesting dialogues. That is one thing I especially enjoyed about Cowork Frederick. There was always a different group of people working when I came in.
Cowork Frederick is a unique place to come and get work done and if I could extend my time here I would because there is always so much to learn! Courtney was always so helpful with her marketing tips and she showed me how important it is to create a brand kit that would guide you with content creation. Another key thing I took away was how important it is to refine your brand’s voice in order to connect with your audience. Cowork Frederick has a particular language they use in order to promote their business and they try to stay away from anything that is too stuffy or corporate-like. In conclusion, I have learned so many things in my short time here, but it was all valuable information that helped me learn a lot more about marketing than I knew before.
