Q&A with Teddy
How did you get into Learning Strategy and Professional Business Development?
My journey into this profession has spanned over 23 years. Through my varied experiences in different fields, I built a well-rounded set of skills. I developed my skills in strategic planning, learning strategy, communications, and operations from my experience in the military, the Department of Defense, and the private sector.
Any tips for others who want to do similar work?
My advice is to follow your interests. My job requires people skills, analytical skills, and effective communication. For those interested in becoming a learning strategist, I suggest taking a nontraditional route. I recommend learning about change management and instructional and learning design. These areas cover developing content and programs, respectively.
Many start in education, become teachers, and then transition their skills to other areas as they grow.
Successful learning strategists often begin by producing presentations and presenting them to clients. If you can envision outcomes, help people create processes to achieve them, and motivate those people along the way, you have what it takes.
Which of the guiding values defined by Cowork Frederick members speaks to you?
My guiding values include boldness, curiosity, and excellence. Boldness involves taking risks and working through fear to achieve something greater. Curiosity drives me to explore new ideas and challenge myself and others. Excellence is about striving for mastery and self-discovery while giving oneself grace. Personal mastery and professional competence are hallmarks of an impactful life filled with happiness. I do my best to improve daily, to fight mediocrity in myself, and to strive for purpose. Offering myself and others grace in the face of failures and challenges is equally challenging. However, having a heart bent toward excellence also means accepting that we don’t always have the “right stuff, ” but we can either develop the skill or find a more apt teammate. These values inspire me to pursue self-development and improvement.
How do you define success?
To me, success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal. It involves setting a goal, taking action, and staying focused on that goal. A successful person defines their goal, works towards it, and keeps it in mind despite challenges. Success requires determination and conscious effort.
Who/What inspires you and keeps you going?
My mother’s memory and my children’s faces inspire me to keep going. Reflecting on my mother’s life and seeing my children each morning motivates me to persevere and strive for a better future.
Why Cowork Frederick?
I’ve been a member of Cowork Frederick for seven years, and it’s all about the community and the people. I love the homey feel of the space and the interactions with members. It has been a transformative experience for me.
