How to Set up Printing

Overview #

We have two community printers, both located in the Community Room on the first floor:

  • a Canon black & white multi-function laser printer/fax/scanner/copier
  • an HP color inkjet printer

The steps to set up your computer to print depend on the type of computer you have and the operating system on that computer.  If none of the instructions below work for you, check the Canon or HP websites for drivers. If that doesn’t work, reach out to a fellow Coworker for help. Oh, and if you find anything wrong or missing with the instructions, please Slack message Julia with corrections.

This online version just has steps.  PDF’s with pictures are also attached.  Drivers are on a USB drive kept right by the printer.

Note: these steps are based on a Mac Book Pro, your prompts may be slightly different.

  1. Insert the USB drive into your computer and go to the Canon1350 MFP folder.
  2. Locate the file called ‘Mac_MF_Ver1060_00.dmg’ inside the OS X Folder and open it (double-click). You may be asked if it’s OK for this program to make changes to your computer. If you are, click “Yes”.
  3. A new finder window should pop up. Choose MF_Printer_Installer.pkg from the selection and double click to open it.
  4. Click “Continue” when prompted.
  5. Click “Continue” once more, and it will prompt you to click “Agree” to the terms and conditions.
  6. Click “Install”. You will be prompted to enter your password to continue. Let it finish processing your request.

Congratulations you are now set up to print!

  7. Choose the drivers (e.g., printer, fax) that you want to install and then click “Next”.
  8. If desired, change the printer name, then click “Next”.
  9. Press “Start”.
  10. If you want, you can set this as your default printer when you’re on the Cowork Frederick network. This choice shouldn’t affect the default printer for your home or other network.  Make a selection and click “Next”.
  11. Check the box if you want to print a test page (optional).

Hurrah! You’re done!

  2. Open the HP Officejet (color) folder, then double-click on “OJX551_DW_Basicx64_188”.Files will extract. If prompted, say “Yes”, so changes can be made to your computer.
  3. Click “Continue”.
  4. Click on the “Connect to a new printer” link.
  5. Strange as it may seem, choose “Wired Network”.  A Network Check screen will appear saying it’s checking the network environment.
  6. When the Connect printer to the router screen shows, click Next.
  7. Choose the HP Officejet Pro X551dw Printer and click Next.  You’ll see a prompt saying the printer is being installed.
  8. You’ll be asked for some information about the printer, as if you’re setting it up for the first time for our business. We haven’t figured how to avoid these questions, so just answer “In a business with 9 or fewer employees” and enter “21701” as the zip code.
  9. Then you’ll be asked to register the printer – as if you’re the only user of this printer (which, of course, is not the case). Click “Skip without activating” (lower left)
  10. All done. Click “Finish”.
