We met Sara Knox while on a mission to network and make as many connections as we could at Toby Mendez’s self-employed party last December. Going through the usual battery of questions, we learned Sara is an artist and seized the opportunity to tell her about our Artist of the Month program. It is our great fortune that Sara agreed to be the Cowork Frederick April Artist of the Month.
Sara Knox, a local artist and graduate of Frederick High School, will hold a First Saturday gallery showing of her clay paintings at Cowork Frederick April 6, 5-9 pm.
“Clay Canvases” focuses on clay as a medium for painting and is unique because these paintings, each framed to hang on a wall, explore the intrinsic qualities of clay without utilizing traditional forms such as mosaics or tiles. They incorporate movement and energy and have a three dimensional quality. Knox’s palette is bright and cheerful.
From Sara’s website: “I love the inventive process of art. I spend endless hours in the studio developing my own techniques and ideas. My work is a journey into the imagination with the aid of experimentation, risk taking, mistake making and idea merging … Some of my biggest inspirations are: Duchamp, Calder, Pollock, VanGogh, Kandinsky and Christo– all of whom developed new techniques or ways of creating art. My goal is to be a unique voice in the art world by creating stunning, inventive and original work.”
Knox recently exhibited her work at the American Craft Council Show in Baltimore, MD. She has shown her work throughout the country in juried exhibitions, and she has participated in more than twenty competitive fine art and craft festivals throughout MD, PA and VA. After receiving her BA in Fine Art at Dickinson College, she studied sculpture and ceramics in the Masters of Fine Art program at Pratt Institute in NYC. She served in the US Army Reserves and is a veteran of the Iraq war. She grew up in Frederick and currently has an art studio in Hagerstown, MD. Her work will remain on display at Cowork Frederick through May 1.
Of course, the art displayed at Cowork Frederick will be available for purchase (directly from Sara, please; we are not an art vendor). Sara’s art can also be found at the following locations:
